If one should have a marriage vow
and it doesn’t include any of what is written here,
then you are not ready for a commitment of a lifetime.
Here’s what I feel a marriage vow should read like:
I promise to not make promises I cannot keep,
and I definitely cannot promise you anything other
than to consistently and constantly pour into my relationship
with my true Self/God,
and as a natural consequence,
inevitably love you the way you were made to be loved.
Here’s an overview of what that encompasses:
I promise to build my courage to love you each time
I am broken, hurt, disappointed or upset,
because I understand that you can only hurt my ego, not love.
I promise to consciously come closer to you with an open heart
instead of closing it shut,
especially in those moments when the easiest thing to do
is to be emotionally distant.
I promise to never choose my ego over my love for you,
because love is my state of being,
and loving you is a choice I will make
every moment of every day with you.
I promise to never stand in the way
of your dreams, goals or aspirations,
because I respect your individual life path,
and I support your growth more than anything else.
I promise to ask myself,
“What would God/my true Self do/say in this situation,
instead of what my limited identity/ego needs/wants?”
because I choose to love you for you
and not for what you can do for me.
All this to say that I promise you
that our relationship might not be what you think you want,
but it will most definitely be what you need,
because isn’t love all that we ever need
when everything else falls away?
Isn’t that why the concept of God is so enticing—
because one’s true desire is to be loved unconditionally?
This is why my vow has no mention
of what I can give/provide you with,
because then what happens
when all those reasons cease to exist?
I don’t love you with my ego;
I love you with love, from love, by love.
I love you
because I am made with love
to love without the I.
This I promise you.
